Last month Argon & Co proudly participated as the Gold sponsor at the End Food Waste Australia National Food Waste Summit 2024.

The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, researchers and innovators to tackle the global issue. Held at the Melbourne Convention Centre the summit aimed to explore solutions, foster collaborations, and drive actionable insights to reduce food waste across the supply chain.

Our Sustainability leaders, Frans Verheij and Pavel Duzhnikov, delivered an engaging keynote “Supercharge Your Sustainability Impact: Food Waste Reduction Across the End-to-End Value Chain,” offering insights on how companies can tackle food waste comprehensively for greater impact.

Some of the key takeaways the team took from the summit included:

  • How can we measure food waste at different stages along the supply chain with a ore focus on consumers, primary producers and manufacturers:

-Data analysis/validation

-Qualitative vs quantitative data and the biases and challenges of both

-The purpose and motivation to measure – you can’t manage unless you measure, transparency, End Food Waste Australia Pact

-Life-cycle analysis – if reducing food waste pulls another environmental lever (e.g. using more plastic packaging to preserve the food), at what point is it more sustainable?

  •  How we can manage food waste at different stages along the supply chain with a core focus on consumers, primary producers and manufacturers:

-Waste management systems such as anaerobic digesters, council based FOGO collections, waste to stockfeed, reuse of waste in new food products (e.g. using wasted veg to make nutrient powders, beer, bread etc.), food donations.

-Behaviour change at a large scale (consumers) and organisation based level and the challenges and research in this area.

  • Policy Insights:

We heard from local councils and government sustainability departments about upcoming regulations and incentives. Mainly discussed incoming tax benefits for donating food (National Food Donation Tax Incentive (NFDTI)) which will encourage businesses to make the most out of their wasted food.

A huge thank you to everyone who visited our stand, interacted with our team, and attended the keynote, for more information or to schedule your FREE Sustainability Workshop session, contact us at [email protected]
